Life Drawn

I am so grateful to my friend Emily (Tomboy on my blogroll) for telling me to sign up for classes at SMC. Just because I’m done with college doesn’t mean I’m done with learnin’! The two of us spent our Wednesday afternoon in the first of many Figure in Motion classes.
For something negligible like 60 bucks, we’re going to spend the next semester becoming fantastic artists! I’m so stoked to be a student again.
In the “What I’m reading” department, I finished Karen Yamashita’s Tropic of Orange. I must tell you now: read whatever your professors have published, it is eye-opening to find out how talented they are. Fantastic read, bar none.
Still going through Men and Cartoons, will let you know how that is.

All my love (and one of the three sketches we got to do yesterday),
Sina

Our Last Summer

One year ago, almost to the day, I was sick.

I received salmonella food poisoning from a restaurant’s batch of bad eggs.  For almost two weeks, I was confined to the living room couch, indenting a large groove in the center from all the sitting and non-movement.  In some respects I’m thankful for this sickness.  Losing all strength and will to move put everything in perspective; anxiety, acne, hunger, lust- they all disappeared.  Plus, my settlement from the insurance company made for a nice cushion when there was no body fat to provide that comfort.

One year later, I’m free of toxins.

It’s done now.  Honestly, I was scared of phantom pains.  When thinking about it, all that pain, would I go through the torture again knowing the benefits?   I don’t know what to tell you.  Why know pain if I already had the strength- to confirm what I already knew to be true?  Sometimes these tests are necessary.

I have everything.

Andante, Not So Larghetto

My summer’s been that of an andante. Things have been great, and I’ve been doing well, but I certainly haven’t been moving at light-speed.

I had the fortunate pleasure to make a trip to San Diego for non-Comic-Con purposes. While I did spend time with some comic friends at Wildstorm and IDW, I also got to experience San Diego the way residents do. I drove up and down the 8 and 15, took the Amtrak Surfline, ate some foodie food, and ate some local grub. Even the indie zeitgeist in me got to visit the indie-est coffee shop in San Diego county: Mystic Mocha (I say with this with certainty, for when I walked in, a hipster patron went to the barista with the news that Gogol Bordello would be visiting in October).

Among so many highlights, I have to say my favorite moment from the weekend was doing karaoke for the first time.

Can\'t Explain All the Feelings That You\'re Making Me Feel

Can't Explain All the Feelings That You're Making Me Feel

My set list was as follows:

Girlfriend in a Coma (by The Smiths) done with Sarah Gaydos
My Doorbell (by The White Stripes) done with Joel Gomez
I Believe in a Thing Called Love (by The Darkness)
Maps (by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs)

I was going to fit Super Trouper in the mix, but my voice was shot after the third song.

I had such an amazing time! My hearty thanks go to Michael, Sarah, Audrie, Ben, Bunny Ellen, Kristy, Joel, Beth and everyone else who showed me the greatest time! The Mission Valley karaoke joint will be seeing me soon!

In other news, I finished Kelly Link’s Stranger Things Happen. I think it was two stories too many for me, but that’s not preventing a heart recommendation to fans of American Magical Realism. I’ve started Men and Cartoons by Jonathan Lethem. The first story in this collection is fantastic.

Here’s something my best friend made once. It was his then, and now it’s yours. Please take a listen:

Pappa Pia

Or, The Dada Movement

My dad visited this week. For those of you who don’t know, my papa lives in Costa Rica. He’s an expatriate with some money to burn, so he came to America to spend time with his son, buy some new gadgets, go to some concerts, and check out sweet cars.

Like the Tesla, for example…

Do you like his new haircut?

We were impressed with the car while we were at the Tesla store, but there was a nagging feeling inside me that made me a bit apprehensive to go into full “I blindly support this car” mode. Yes, it runs entirely on electricity, and all you have to do is plug it in overnight and you’re good for 200 miles the next day, yet there was still something suspicious about it all… Long story short: when we were at the Toyota dealership later that night (an entirely different story), some of the guys there informed my pops and I that the Tesla’s been very problematic in that it’s not performing as well as the prototype, that the company has received a lot of (legal) complaints because of how late the customers’ orders are, and there’s a bunch of scary stuff about the battery blowing up or blowing out. Don’t ask me about that, I can barely run this blog.

Well, at least it looks cool and takes its name from a cool dude- a dude deserving of the David Bowie cameo in The Prestige.

I’ll leave you with that for now. I’m still in love with Battlestar, and I haven’t finished my current novel to move on to other books.

You’ll see a new drawing up here in the next post.

My love goes beyond what words can say.
Love,
Beyonce

Trophy, or, Sister Carrie (Bradshaw)

Hey! Comments are back on! You don’t have to sign up! Just comment freely!

I’m a year older. I look good in my new jacket.

So, one year ago I started working on an eight-page story for my friend Matt. You’ve seen so many panels, and you know the story: Salmonella food poisoning, going to school, and all that jazz have kept me from completing it. I’m here to tell you that due to pending deadlines, I will be finished this week. I think my partner in crime Susan is the happiest.

While scouring through my folders and binders, I came across this humorous Books with Pictures drawing I did at a signing in Los Angeles. For your enjoyment, Melissa fights the Fantastic Four.

Melissa already won.

Melissa already won.

Okay, so to this whole Sister Carrie analogy. Basically, if you’ve got money, don’t spend it.

Please read Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie. It’s a great piece of American literature, and its message on consumption rings true even after 100+ years. The reader follows a nothing of a country bumpkin gal as she tries to make life work in the big city. Along the way, we watch how our leading lady Carrie gets excited over fashion, and clothing, and money-money-money, enough to drop the “nice” guy because a taken man’s got bling for cuff links. Remind you of another Carrie trying to make it in the big city?

Learn from Carrie Meeber or Carrie Bradshaw, or poor George Hurstwood: it’s not cool to spend all of your money on expensive clothes. Living in a ratty apartment and being satisfied by the perfect pair of whatever is actually super not cool. The difference between us and rich folks, is they buy boats. They buy Rolls-Royces and all those things Missy Elliot sings about and their clothing, accessories, glasses, purses, and so on are just clothes to them, not treasures. And, if things go sour for you, selling nice shirts and shit ain’t gonna pay the rent for your ratty apartment (a lesson shown in both Sex and the City and Sister Carrie).

The lesson above is one I’ve learned, contrary to popular belief.

I just like to look hella nice.

Are You Alive?

It’s already geeky enough that in the last post I talked about meeting an actor from Torchwood, now I have to go into full nerd-out mode and tell you kind readers that I have been watching Battlestar Galactica. Thanks Claire.

I watch this show with pride. It’s like Brian Bendis wrote a sci-fi opera and everyone cast was attractive (even the old colonels, in their own wrinkly right). I think even Ice Cube likes it. He called it “A sci-fi Sopranos.”

With that, I give you a drawing I threw together of Tricia Helfer as Number Six. I was supposed to be wrapping up a long-delayed story for my friend’s anthology, but this came out instead. Enjoy.

You've already lost.

You've already lost.

In other news:
I’m proud to say that I’ve read four novels this summer. It’s been a goal of mine that after graduating, I go through all the books I’ve bought in the past five years and read them before buying any more.

Here’s the battle so far…

BOOKS I’VE READ:
When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris
Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
An Invisible Sign of my Own by Aimee Bender
The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett

BOOKS LEFT TO FINISH:
Tropic of Orange by Karen Tei Yamashita
Stranger Things Happen by Kelly Link
Tesla by Tad Wise
Apples by Richard Wilward
That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis
The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Michael Chabon
Maps and Legends by Michael Chabon
The Collected Stories by Amy Hempel
The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex
Opening Skinner’s Box by Lauren Slater
Men and Cartoons by Jonathan Lethem
Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire by Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola
Lord Darcy by Randall Garrett
The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell

Ugh. Nobody said it was easy…

There’s a post in my head that I’ve been meaning to write called “Sister Carrie (Bradshaw),” dealing with fashion, consumption, and literature. We’ll see if that happens.

Playing it Cool

I went to San Diego Comic-Con and this is the only picture I got…

Iianto's unamused.

Iianto's unamused.

This was mainly to amuse Jack and Harris, but it was funny to do the convention thing and meet somebody from a precariously silly sci-fi show. Before you know it, I will be on a cruise with thousands of Doctor Who fans, or maybe even Star Trek, or, after a few concussions, Lost.

Now, as much as you all love photos of me embarrassing myself (NOT!), I’m going to share the newest ‘Lil Depressed Boy strip, compliments of colorist supreme S. Steven Struble, who blew me away with his excellent LDB merch (always a pleasure to spend some face time with you, Strubes).

Without further ado, here’s “Ramen.”
